Baby Cots

A baby cot will last your baby from birth until baby is approximately three years old. Cots are usually made from wood, either from solid beech, or pine. The mattress fits inside, although you will need to purchase a mattress separately.

There are many models available; you could choose one with a four-position mattress base to adjust as your baby grows or pick a bedside cot. Carry and travel cots are great if you go on holiday. Most will arrive in flat-pack format, so you may need some basic hand tools.

We didn't buy a baby cot with a dropside action and wished we had as I developed a bad back!

Moses Baskets

Moses baskets are smaller than baby cots. They are lightweight and can be moved from room to room.

We used a moses basket while our baby slept with us. It kept the baby snug and cosy to start with, rather than being put in a large cot.
Our baby is now four months old and hardly fits in it now! Also her feet get caught in the carrying handles.

Cribs

Cribs are small cots which are suitable from birth to about six months.

We never got a crib as we didn't have enough space although the self-rocking type looks excellent.
The Eco crib (above) is great value and environmentally friendly. It is made from recyclable heavy-duty cardboard with a funky print designed to be placed next to the parents' bed, for soothing and rocking of babies.

It breaks down flat, ideal when travelling with your baby. It's fire retardent, and the Crib and packaging is all recyclable.
